TRASTEVERE
(Trastevere, Villa Farnesina, Tiberine Island, Jewish Ghetto)
Let's go across the river to discover Trastevere:
in Latin "trans Tiberim", across the Tiber. Up till Augustus the right bank
of the Tiber was outside the city limits, at present Trastevere is one of the most
fashionable and charming place in Rome.
We'll visit the Villa Farnesina. one of the Renaissance
masterpieces built at the beginning of the 16th century for the banker Agostino Chigi.
This villa which it's a perfect fusion of architecture and nature contains famous
frescoes by Raphael.
Stroll with us through the small streets of the borough to the heart of Trastevere
till the church of Santa Maria in Trastevere. According
to tradition this was the first catholic church in Rome to be dedicated to the virgin
Mary and originally it dates back to the 3rd century.
We'll finish our guided tour in the area of the Jewish Ghetto after crossing the
river on Tiberine island.
